Two Lefts and a Hard Right
Every black person in America was waiting for McKay’s episode. He already came off like the stereotypical black football player on an all-white team who gets a white girlfriend so that he can fit in with his peers. The only thing that they could’ve done to make him more clichéd was to give him an absent father for a dad. So instead, Euphoria gave him an absent mother because he wouldn’t be a black character on television unless one of the parents is missing am I right? Oh but wait, he might not be as clichéd as we think. They gave him a brain! Instead of making him the stereotypical dumb black football player, they made him smart enough to realize that his likelihood of going to the league is minimal (*cheers in sarcasm*). The gag is, it gets worse lol. His character is based off of “America,” a sonnet about black people trying to prevail in a racist society by none other than, Harlem Poet, Claude McKay…hence his name, McKay.
I’m sorry but…what type of black social justice agenda is this show trying to do because they are doing it HORRIBLY. In the beginning of the episode, McKay gets ejected after attacking a white player, presumably for using a racial slur…BUT EUPHORIA DIDN’T EVEN SHOW THE SLUR. I’m over here like…yall will really put small white dicks, naked women, every drug under the sun, porn, teenagers doing fin dom, and all of this other revolutionary shit, but won’t put the racial slur said to a black character in an episode that is supposed to be about the struggles of that black character…a black character who is literally named after a sonnet addressing the struggles of black people. NOT ONLY THAT, Euphoria is all dandy with showing a gang of white dudes beating up and humping McKay, but didn’t address the scene or the implications of it at all afterwards. They didn’t explain how it made him feel, the intricacies of how his race affects the way he connects with him teammates, why he is shy around his peers, why his dad pushed him harder than the other players…They really neglected to show anything of substance about his character. The timidity towards discussions of racism on this show is laughable lol. All I’m saying is, is that if they want the brownie points with black people (which is clearly what they were trying to do with his character), then do it right. Or at least, try.
On another note…am I the only one that has 0 sympathy for Cassie? Like when I say 0, I literally mean that my sympathy meter is on E. She absolutely lives for the sexual attention that she gets from men; she honestly thrives off of it. She’s a total sex symbol. And no, that does not mean that I think her nudes should have been released…under no circumstance should private photos of anyone be shared. But one thing I don’t condone, is cheating. Everyone has a sob story…literally everyone. Whether it be your parents that left you so you can’t commit, an ex that cheated, blah blah blah…It doesn’t give you an excuse to go around violating people. Have a spine, break up with him. She just cries and has this giant “woe is me”/white girl tears attitude that is honestly exhausting. They also showed her glimpsing at a box, which clearly indicates that there will be a pregnancy scare in either this episode or the finale. Which isn’t surprising because it wouldn’t be a high-school drama without one.
Maddy and Nate’s story line has taken two lefts and a right. In my post about episode 5, I wrote about how ecstatic I was that the show was finally portraying the reactions and experiences of victims, students, and perpetrators as authentic, but I was clearly naive for thinking that Euphoria was going to be the end all be all for domestic violence representation. The whole story line has just shifted into scene after scene of Nate just being a complete psychopath. Blackmailing Jules, beating up the guy that Maddy willingly hooked up with in the pool, Nate threatening that same guy into filing a police report saying that he strangled Maddy, and then Nate being sad because he can’t go to a restaurant with his family after choking the shit out of Maddy. I don’t even know where they are about to go with this storyline and honestly, I’m not interested anymore.
Rue is clearly on the brink of using again. They are probably going to show that in the season finale. Jules is absolutely losing it, and rightfully so. And my girl Kat!!! Ethan went down on her and she didn’t even reciprocate…REAL HOT GIRL SHIT. We will see how the next two episodes unfold with these 3 characters, because they haven’t had much of a spotlight in the last few episodes. Only time will tell. XOXO Gossip Jazz
